Hartington Rural Social Group on Tuesday 26th July at Hartington Village Hall (2.00-4.00) : to accompany homemade cakes, tea and coffee we will hear about the nearby Ecton Copper Mine, source of the 5th Duke of Devonshire’s wealth. The ore yielded as much as 60% copper with the boom period being 1760-1790 and was the source of money  used to build Buxton’s Crescent and what is now the Devonshire Dome. The mining supervisor, credited with developing the technology to exploit the ore, lived at the ‘Old Vicarage’, Hartington and his grave is in St Giles’ Churchyard. We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday afternoon as we travel back in time to a fascinating period in the local area.
